Beta
Beta is a measure of a company's common stock price volatility relative to the market. Here, beta is the slope of the 60 month regression line of the percentage price change of the stock relative to the percentage price change of the S&P 500. Beta values are not calculated if less than 24 months of pricing is available.

Bollinger Bands
Consists of a centerline and a set of channel lines. The center is an n-interval exponential moving average. The channel lines are placed n-standard deviations above and below the centerline. Since standard deviations are a measure of volatility, the bands are self-adjusting: widening during volatile price action and contracting during tighter trading ranges. Sharp price action is traditionally expected to follow a tight narrowing of the Bollinger Bands.

Book Value
Total shareholder's equity minus preferred stock and redeemable preferred stock.

Bullish
Used to describe an optimistic sentiment toward an issue, an index, or the market in general; a bullish sentiment reflects a belief that prices will tend to rise.

Capital Spending 5 Year Growth
Compound annual growth rate of capital spending over the last 5 years. Capital spending is the sum of the capital expenditure items found on the statement of cash flows.

Cash Per Share
Total cash plus short term investments divided by the shares outstanding at the end of the most recent fiscal quarter.

The point on a graph where two or more lines intersect; usually indicates a price action event.

Covering Shorts
To close a short position; to buy back a security previously sold to replace the brokerage's supply.

Current Ratio
Current assets divided by current liabilities; measures a company's ability to meet its current financial obligations with current assets.

Customize
An area accessible from the top line of the nav bar; used to set attributes that personalize your ClearStation experience, including password changes, email, and graph options.

Diluted
Diluted shares is the number of shares of common stock that would be outstanding if all convertible securities were converted to common.

Directional Movement Indicator
Helps determine if a security is trending. When the +DI rises above the -DI, it can indicate an uptrend. When the +DI crosses below the -DI, it can indicate a downtrend.

Divergence
Occurs when two indicators are not confirming each other. The indicators could be price, volume and technical indicators like Stochastic, RSI, OBV, Momentum. Divergence often indicates a trend reversal in the offing.

Dividend Declaration
A dividend declaration is the announcement that earnings will be distributed to the shareholders of a security. Stocks listed in the Tag & Bag "Dividend Declaration" list have recently announced dividends.

Dividend Rate
Total of the expected dividends for the next 12 months; typically, the most recent cash dividend paid or declared multiplied by the dividend payment frequency, plus any recurring extra dividends.

Dividend 5-Year Growth Rate
The compound annual growth rate of cash dividends per common share of stock over the last 5 years.

Dividend Percent Change Year over Year
Percent change in annual dividend per share as compared to the same period one year ago.

Dividend Yield
Current percentage dividend yield based on the present cash dividend rate. It is calculated as the indicated annual dividend divided by the current price, multiplied by 100.

Dividend Yield (5 Year Average)
Average of the dividend yield over the last 60 months.

Donchian Channels

Donchian Channels, developed by technical analysis pioneer Richard Donchian, are 5- and 20-day moving averages. They plot the highest high and lowest low over the last X time intervals. The futures industry widely uses 20-day low and high levels as support and resistance. A simple trading system is to buy a breakout above a 20-day high and sell short a breakdown below a 20-day low. 5-day low and 5-day high levels are often used to stop long positions and short positions respectively.

Downtrend
When the price of a stock or index experiences a series of declining peaks and troughs (lower highs and lower lows), it is said to be in a downtrend.

Earnings Per Share
Portion of a company's profit allocated to each outstanding share of common stock.

EPS 5 Year Growth Compound annual growth rate of earnings per share excluding extraordinary items and discontinued operations over the last 5 years.

EPS MRQ vs 1st Q 1 Year Ago Compares earnings per share for the most recent quarter to earnings per share for the 1st quarter of the last year.

EPS Percent Change Year over Year Percent change in annual EPS as compared to the same period one year ago.

EPS 12M MA vs 1 Year Ago A 12 month moving average of earnings per share compared to the same average a year ago.

Earnings Expected
The date a company is expected to announce earnings. Stock price can be affected around the earnings announcement.

Earnings Surprise
Stocks whose earnings are exceding or falling short of market expectations.

EBITD Margin
Earnings before interest, taxes and depreciation (for the last twelve months) expressed as a percent of trailing twelve month total revenue.

Average of values of annual EBITD margins for five most recent fiscal years.

Effective Tax Rate
Tax paid divided by taxable income for a given year.

Effective Tax Rate (5 Year Avg.) Calculated by first determining the effective tax rate for the 5 most recent fiscal years and averaging the values.

Estimated 1-Year EPS Growth Rate (%)This is an estimated annual growth rate of a company in the short to middle term. It is an average of analysts' growth rate estimates of next fiscal year.

Estimated 1-Year EPS Revision (%)This percentage compares current average of analysts' 1-year EPS estimates with the same average four weeks ago. It is calculated as the current average of analysts' 1-year EPS estimates divided by the average estimate four weeks ago, then multiplied by 100.

Exchange Traded Group Funds
These types of funds trade a basket of stocks with similar industrial backgrounds in a single transaction. They are very good underlying tools to trade based on groups.

EMA
Exponential moving average; a moving average that gives weight to the latest data points, thereby responding more quickly to recent trends. For more information on EMAs, check out Education.

Gap Down
A gap down occurs when the opening price of a stock is below the lowest price of previous day, leaving an open space on the chart that is not filled during the day. In other words, today's high is lower than previous day's low.

Gap Up
A gap up occurs when the opening price of a stock is above the highest price of previous day, leaving an open space on the chart that is not filled during the day. In other words, today's low is higher than previous day's high.

Going Long
Taking a long position, or buying a security, on the expectation that the price will rise.

Going Short
Taking a short position, or executing a short sale on a security, on the expectation that a stock price will decline.

Gross Margin
The percentage of each revenue dollar left over after deducting the direct costs of producing the goods or services.

Gross Margin (5 Year Avg)
Calculated by first determining the Gross Margin for each of the 5 most recent fiscal years and then averaging the values. Gross Margin is total revenue minus cost of goods sold divided by total revenue and is expressed as a percentage.

Held By Institutions (%)
This is the percent of common stock held by all the reporting institutions as a group. It is calculated as total shares owned by institutions divided by total shares outstanding. Then multiplied by 100 .

Industries
Stocks share similar business backgrounds tend to move together. ClearStation classify major exchange-traded active stocks into sectors and industries to compare and monitor them as groups. In each sector, industries classify the business perspectives of stocks into next level of details and group stocks at a sub-level.

Insider Buy Transactions, 6 Month
Number of officers and directors that purchased their company's common stock in the last six months.

Insider Net Shares Purchased (millions)
Net difference between the number of shares of company stock purchased by officers and directors and the number of shares sold by officers and directors during the preceding six months.

Insider Net Trades, 6 Month
Net difference between the number of officers and directors that purchased the company's stock and the number of officers and directors that sold the company's stock in the last six months.

Insider Sell Transactions, 6 Month
Number of officers and directors that sold the company's stock in the last six months.

Insider Shares Purchased (millions)
Number of shares of company stock purchased by officers and directors in the last six months.

Cost of goods sold for the trailing twelve months divided by average inventory. Average Inventory is calculated by adding the inventory for the 5 most recent quarters and dividing by 5. This value measures how quickly the inventory is sold.

IPO
Initial public offering; the first time a stock is traded in the public market.

Issue
Security distributed to the public.

Last Analyst Rating
It is the latest analyst rating from Upgrade, Downgrade or Initiation.

Last Price
It is the latest stock quote that we have received. The data is updated during a trading session.

Last Split Date
Date of stock's most recent split.

Factor by which a stock most recently split.

Limit Order
A type of execution order that is fulfilled by your brokerage; to execute an order at a specified price (if that price condition is not met, then no trade will occur).

Long Close
The money that one made or lost as the result of taking a long position.

Long Performance
The amount of money that would be made or lost on a long position, were it to be closed immediately.
(See: Portfolio)

Long Position
Ownership of a security and its presence in a portfolio; includes all aspects of ownership (such as the right to transfer ownership by sale or gift, the right to receive any income paid by the security, and the right to any profits or losses as the security's value changes).

Long Recommendation
A suggestion to buy a stock on the belief that the price of the issue will rise.

Long Term Debt/Equity Ratio
Compares a company's capital base to its debt.

MACD
Moving average convergence-divergence, a technical analysis indicator based on the interaction of a long-term moving average and a short-term moving average, consists of two lines. The fast line is the difference between two moving averages (drawn in red on ClearStation graphs), and the slow line is a smoothing (or rate of change) of the fast line. (The slow line is drawn in blue on ClearStation graphs.) The crossover of the two lines may produce bullish and bearish trending signals. For more information on MACD, check out Education.

MACD-Bearish ("Trending Lower")
MACD
, or Moving Average Convergence-Divergence, is a trending indicator based on the interaction of a long-term moving average and a short-term moving average. Market Capitalization
Number of outstanding shares multiplied by the current market price of a share; value of a corporation as determined by the market price of its stock.

Market Order
To execute an order at the current bid or ask price on the exchange; a type of execution order that is fulfilled by your brokerage.

Markets
Accessed on the main line of the nav bar; provides market news and a concise overview of the broad market indices.

The A-List's "Member Recommendation" is the stock most recently posted to the Recommend area by a ClearStation member. This pick is updated throughout the day.

Momentum
Measures the amount that a security's price has changed over a given time span. It is a technique to construct an overbought-oversold oscillator. A popular method of interpreting Momentum is looking for a divergence opposite to the prevailing trend. If a stock is in an uptrend and continually reaching new highs, but Momentum is nosing its way down, a trend reversal could be in the offing.

Moving Average ("MA")
A moving average describes the average value of data over a specified period of time.
(See: EMA)

MRQ
Most recent quarter.

Net
Figure remaining after all relevant deductions have been made from the gross amount.
(See: Portfolio)

Net Income/Employee
A company's net income, divided by the number of employees.

Net Profit Margin (TTM)
Income after taxes for the trailing twelve months divided by total revenue for the same period expressed as a percentage; net income as a percentage of net sales.

Net Profit Margin (5 Year Average)
Calculated by first determining the net profit margin for each of the 5 most recent fiscal years and then averaging the values. Net profit margin is the income after taxes divided by total revenue, expressed as a percentage.

New Highs
It is the number of stocks making new 52-week highs in a sector or an industry.

New Lows
It is the number of stocks making new 52-week lows in a sector or an industry.

Number of Institutions
Number of institutions (pension funds, mutual funds, etc.) that currently report an investment position in the company's stock.

On-Balance Volume (OBV)
An accumulation-of-volume indicator. If a stock closes up (in price), the current day's volume is added to OBV; if the stock closes at a lower price, the volume is subtracted.

Operating Margin (TTM)
Percent of revenues remaining after all operating expenses have been paid (previous 12 months' operating income divided by previous 12 months' total revenue, multiplied by 100).

Operating Margin (5 Year Average)
Percent of revenues remaining after paying all operating expenses. It is calculated by first determining the Operating Margin for each of the last 5 fiscal years and then averaging the values.

Oscillate
The vacillation of a stock within a trading range; occurs between a lower price support level, where traders tend to buy, and a higher price resistance level, where traders tend to sell. For more information, check out Education.

Overbought
Condition in which a security or market has recently experienced a sharp rise in price and is vulnerable to a price drop (because few buyers are left to drive the price up any farther).

Oversold
Condition in which a security or market has recently experienced a sharp drop in price and is due for a rise in price (because there are few sellers left).
(See: Stochastic)

Parabolic SAR
"Stop-and-reversal" system used to set the next day's price stops and reversal entries. When price falls below the SAR, it provides an exit point for long positions and an entry point for short positions. When the price rises above the SAR, it provides an exit point for short positions and an entry point for long positions.

Payout Ratio
Percentage of the Primary/Basic Earnings Per Share Excluding Extraordinary Items paid to common stockholders in the form of cash dividends during the trailing twelve months.

PEG
The price/earnings (P/E) ratio divided by expected per-share earnings growth over the coming year. A value of less than 1 implies that the stock may be undervalued; more than 1 implies that it is overvalued.

P/E High (Last 5 yrs)
The P/E Ratio for each of the past 60 months is calculated using the month end price divided by the trailing twelve month Earnings Per Share (EPS) excluding extraordinary items ending at least 1 month earlier than the pricing date. The highest of these 60 P/E values is the 5 Year High Price Earnings Ratio.

P/E Low (Last 5 yrs)
The P/E Ratio for each of the past 60 months is calculated using the month end price divided by the trailing twelve month Earnings Per Share (EPS) excluding extraordinary items ending at least 1 month earlier than the pricing date. The lowest of these 60 P/E values is the 5 Year Low Price Earnings Ratio.

P/E Ratio
Short for Price/Earnings Ratio; price of a stock divided by its earnings per share. (See: Earnings Per Share)

Percentage Gainer
Stocks listed as Percentage Gainers had the highest percent gain in their markets.

Percent Off High
It is the percentage difference between a stock's current price and its new high. It is calculated as the difference from 52 week high of the stock to its latest close price divided by its 52 week high.

Percent Change, Sector and Industry Group (N day)
This is a sector or industry aggregate price percentage change between latest close and the close that is N sessions before the latest close. It is only calculated and updated after market close.

Percent Change, Sector and Industry Group (N week)
This is a sector or industry aggregate price percentage change between latest close and the close that is N weeks before the latest close. It is only calculated and updated after market close.

Percentage Loser
Stocks listed as Percentage Losers had the highest percent loss in their markets.

Percentage Growth in Dividend
Compound annual growth rate in cash dividends per share of common stock over the last 3 years.

Percentage Growth in Earnings per Share
Compound annual growth rate of earnings per share excluding extraordinary items and discontinued operations over the last 1, 3 or 5 years.

Percentage Growth in Sales
Percent change in annual sales as compared to the same period one year ago.

Percentage Off High
The difference of the last price of a stock from its historical price high.

Percentage of Winning Trades
Percentage of winning trades based on performance of all open recommendations as well as all recommendations closed in the last three months.

Position Size
The number of shares you own in any stock.

Price/Book Value
Compares a stock's price to its book value per share. (See: Book Value)

Price/Cash Flow/Share
Current price divided by cash flow per share for the trailing twelve months. Cash flow is defined as income after taxes minus preferred dividends and general partner distributions plus depreciation, depletion and amortization.

Price Gainer
Stocks listed as price gainers are those experiencing the greatest price gain.

Price Loser
Stocks listed as price losers are those experiencing the greatest price loss.

Price Percentage Change (TTM)
Net rise or fall of the price of a stock for the preceding twelve months, expressed as a percentage.

Price/Free Cash/Share
Current price divided by the trailing twelve month free cash flow per share. Free cash flow is calculated from the Statement of Cash Flows as cash from operations minus capital expenditures and dividends paid.

Price/Earnings Ratio
Price of a stock divided by its earnings per share.

Price/Sales
Current price divided by the sales per share for the trailing twelve months. If there is a preliminary earnings announcement for a quarter that has recently ended, the revenue (sales) values from this announcement will be used in calculating the trailing twelve month revenue per share.

Quick Ratio
Cash plus Short Term Investments plus Accounts Receivable for the most recent fiscal quarter divided by the Total Current Liabilities for the same period.

Rank Group (Industry or Sector)
It is a price performance rank based on each group's price percentage change for a period of time. ClearStation uses 13-week price percentage changes to rank among sectors or industry groups. The group with highest percentage change is ranked 1, the next is ranked 2, etc.

RS Rating
This is a Percentile that compares the price changes of a stock with all stocks trading on exchanges and ranges from 1 to 99, with 99 = Best. ClearStation uses 13-week price percentage changes to rank exchange-traded stocks and rate a stock based on the percentage of stocks it over performs. For example, a 78 rating means that the stock's last 13-week price change is higher than 78% of stocks.

Receivable Turnover
Total revenue for the trailing twelve months divided by average accounts receivables. Average receivables is calculated by adding the accounts receivables for the 5 most recent quarters and dividing by 5.

Recommend
An area accessed on the main line of the nav bar; contains a listing of performance-ranked portfolios for members who have chosen to participate in this area. For more information, check out Help.

Record Price Break Out

Record Price High
A stock listed as a record price high is setting a 52-week price high.

Record Price Low
A stock listed as a record price low has fallen to a new a 52-week low price..

Record Volume
A stock listed under record volume is experiencing a 52-week record high volume.

Resistance Line
A level beyond which a stock's price cannot seem to rise; acts as a ceiling over the price, and can cause the price of the stock to fall after hitting it. For more information, check out Education.

Retracement
A reversal (or correction) in the price trend of a stock (common after severe and consistent changes in a stock's price).

Revenue/Employee
A company's total revenue, divided by number of employees.

Revenue Percent Change Year over Year
Percent change in annual revenue as compared to the same period one year ago.

ROA (5 Year Average)
Return on assets; calculated by first determining the annual return on assets for each of the 5 most recent years and then averaging the resulting values.

ROA (TTM)
Return on assets; income after taxes for the trailing twelve months divided by the average total assets, expressed as a percentage. Average total assets is calculated by adding the total assets for the 5 most recent quarters and dividing by 5.

ROE (5 Year Average)
Return on equity; calculated by first determining the annual return on average common equity for each of the 5 most recent years and then averaging the resulting values.

ROE (TTM)
Return on equity; income available to common stockholders for the trailing twelve months divided by the common equity and is expressed as a percentage. Average common equity is calculated by adding the common equity for the 5 most recent quarters and dividing average by 5.

ROI (5 Year Average)
Return on investments; calculated by first determining the annual return on investment for each of the most recent fiscal years and then averaging the values. The return on investment is the annual income after taxes divided by the average total long term debt, other long term liabilities and shareholders equity and expressed as a percentage.

ROI (TTM)
Return on investments; trailing twelve month income after taxes divided by the average total long term debt, other long term liabilities and shareholders equity, and expressed as a percentage.

RSI
A momentum indicator or oscillator that measures the relative internal strength of a stock against itself. A popular method of interpreting RSI is looking for a divergence opposite to the prevailing trend. If a stock is in an uptrend and continually reaching new highs, but RSI is nosing its way down, a trend reversal could be in the offing.

Sales 5 Year Growth
Compound annual growth rate of sales over the last 5 years.

Sales MRQ vs 1st Q 1 Year Ago Most recent quarterly sales minus the sales for the 1st quarter of the last year divided by the sales for the 1st quarter of the last year and multiplied by 100.

Sales 12M MA vs 1 Year Ago Sales 12 month moving average compared to the sales 12 month moving average from the previous year.

Schedule D
A tax-filing aid that describes the complete listing of trading activity for a tax year.

Sectors
Stocks share similar business backgrounds tend to move together. ClearStation classify major exchange-traded active stocks into sectors and industries to compare and monitor them as groups. Sectors broadly classify stocks based on major business categories and group them together at a top level.

Shares Outstanding
All shares of a corporation which have been issued.

Shares Sold (mil)
Average monthly volume of shares sold short, in millions.

Short Close
The money made or lost as the result of taking a short position.

Short Interest, Current Month (millions)
Total number of shares borrowed by investors for sale (sold short), but not yet repurchased to close out short positions.

Short Interest Percentage Change
One month percentage change in short interest.

Short Interest Percentage Float
Percentage of the total float represented by short interest.

Short Interest Shares (mil)
Average daily volume of short interest (in millions).

Short Performance
The amount of money that would be made or lost on a short position, were you to cover the position immediately.

Short Position
Selling a stock by borrowing shares owned by your broker and buying them at a later date on the belief that the price will fall.

Short Ratio
Number of days it would take to cover the short interest if trading continued at the average daily volume for the month. It is calculated as the short interest for the current month divided by the average daily volume.

Short Recommendation
A suggestion to short a stock on the belief that the price of the issue will decline.

Short Sale
A way to make money on a stock whose price is going down; to sell the stock by borrowing shares owned by your broker and buying them at a later date on the belief that the price will fall.

Signaling Message
Describes the technical analysis price event that triggered a price condition such as a "Price High" or "Trending Up."

Split
An increase in a corporation's outstanding shares that decreases the par value of its stocks. The maket value of the total number of shares remains the same, and there is no change in individual shareholders' equity.

Splits Pending
When a stock split has been announced but not effected, it is said to be pending.

Stochastic
An overbought/oversold oscillator which compares a stock's closing price relative to its price range over a specific time period. It uses two line: 5K and its 3-period moving average, %D. The two lines fluctuate in a range between 0 and 100. Readings above 80 indicate overbought while those below 20 indicate oversold. When used in conjunction with MACD, which identifies the direction of a stock's trend, Stochastic can be used to identify turning points in the price of a stock and time trades effectively. Stock Price Change
This is the difference between the last stock price and the stock close price of previous session. This is calculated by the stock's last price minus previous close. The data is updated during a trading session.

Stock Volume
It is the latest accumulated traction volume quote that we have received. The data is updated during a trading session.

Stock Price % Change
This is the percentage change between the last stock price and the stock close price of previous session. This is calculated as the Stock Price Change divided by previous close. The data is updated during a trading session.

Support Line
A price level below which a stock does not seem to fall; can act as a floor in that when a stock's price hits it, the price bounces off and starts to climb again. For more information, check out Education.

Trends
Demonstrated and consistent changes (up- or downwards) in price or indicator levels.

Trailing twelve-month.

Uptrend
When the price of a stock or index experiences a series of higher peaks and troughs (higher highs and higher lows), it is said to be in an uprend.

3-Point View Vol % Change
This is a volume percentage change between the end-of-day last quoted volume and the volume in previous session. It is calculated as Today's volume minus Previous Day's volume divided by the Previous Day's volume times 100. This is updated at the close of market.

Tag & Bag Vol % Change
This is a volume percentage change between the volume in the previous session and the average volume. It is calculated as Previous Day's volume minus average volume divided by the average volume times 100. This is updated at the close of market.

Vol % Change, Sector and Industry Group
This is a sector or industry aggregate volume percentage change between latest close and previous close. It is only calculated and updated after market close.

Watch List
Accessible on the main line of the nav bar; a portfolio to which stock ideas (and their sources) can be added from anywhere on the site.

Williams %R
A momentum indicator that measures overbought/oversold levels. Similar to stochastic, Williams %R indicates an oversold condition when below the lower 20% line and an overbought condition above the upper 80% line.

Short for year.

Yield
Percentage rate of return paid on a stock in dividends.

13-day EMA cross above 50-day EMA
Stocks whose fast moving average line (the 13-day line) has just risen above the slow moving average line (the 50-day line). This occurrence can signal the beginning of an uptrend.

13-day EMA cross below 50-day EMA
Stocks whose fast moving average line (the 13-day line) has just fallen below the slow moving average line (the 50-day line). This occurrence can signal the beginning of a downtrend.

13-Week vs. Industry
This percentage compares a stock with its industry group. It is calculated as the 13-week price percentage change of the stock divided by the 13-week price percentage change of its industry group, then multiplied by 100. The data is updated during a trading session.

13-Week Change vs. S&P (%)
This percentage measures the relative performance between a stock (or a stock group) and S&P 500 index. It is calculated as the 13-week price percentage change of a stock or a stock group divided by the 13-week S&P 500 price percentage change, then multiplied by 100.

50-day EMA cross above 13-day EMA
The slow moving average line (50-day) rising above the fast moving average line (13-day); a signal for a possible downtrend. For more information, check out Education.
