I
can't remember my login information! What can I do?
Don't worry - we can email that to you!
I can't seem to
log in - am I doing something wrong?
The system is case sensitive. If you get an error message saying that
your password or username is invalid, the first thing to do is make sure
that you have the appropriate letters capitalized. You might also check
to see if you have your "Caps Lock" key depressed.
I get caught in
a loop where I'm repeatedly asked for my login information, but I can't
login!
Many different things could cause this. The first thing you should check
is whether your browser's cookies settings are enabled. You need to have
cookies enabled on your browser to access ClearStation!
Under your browser's
options or preferences, select "Advanced". If you look through the "Advanced"
section, you'll find an area called "Cookies". You should mark "Accept
all cookies", and then click "Okay" at the bottom of the window.
If you have concerns
about accepting cookies, please check out our privacy
statement.
Proxies may also get
in the way of logging in. If you run any kind of caching program (for
example Webcelerator, NetSonic Pro, etc.) you may want to change your
preferences to exclude ClearStation from being cached.
How do I log out?
Closing your browser will log you out of your ClearStation session. This
prevents unwanted eyes from viewing your information.
Why won't my email
address work when I try to register? What is my email address?
To register for ClearStation, you need to use your complete email address.
Here are some examples:
Note: Email
addresses do not include spaces or commas! Incorrect email addresses result
in account deactivation.
I just signed up
and created a portfolio - did I buy these stocks??
No, the portfolio is created as an example. There is no trading on ClearStation.
I'd like to sign
up for ClearStation, but are there any charges?
No. The current ClearStation offering is free. We are working on additional
subscription-based offerings for people who want more in-depth information
and instruction in investing. Dates and pricing for these new offerings
will be announced in the future.
Why is my AOL email
address not valid??
Please be sure to enter your full email address - domain name (@aol.com)
included. Here's an example:
xxxx@aol.com
I need to change
my password!
The "modify account" link in Customize covers that too. (See above.)
How do I go about
changing my username?
Just send us a note
and we'll take care of it! Please include what you'd like for a new username.
I
need to pick an online brokerage. Do you have any words of wisdom on the
matter?
We recommend checking out Gomez
Advisors. They have an excellent resource for researching brokerages,
rating them according to many different criteria.
Who
is kensey??
Otherwise known as "kensey", Doug Fairclough is ClearStation's co-founder
and Chief Investment Strategist. In addition to providing ClearStation
Members with his popular daily stock recommendations, Fairclough is a
regular technical commentator for TheStreet.com, Microsoft Investor, and
other financial media.
Prior to ClearStation,
he developed financial software for industry leaders like Fidelity, State
Street Bank, and Bank of America, and was one of the founding engineers
for Wired magazine's pioneering Web site, HotWired.
ClearStation
is a trove of information - I can't believe I made money before without
it! But how much does it cost?
The current ClearStation offering is free. We are working on additional
subscription-based offerings for active traders and for beginners who
want more in-depth instruction in investing. Dates and pricing for these
new offerings will be announced in the future.
When
do graphs get updated?
Graphs are updated by around 7pm PST (10pm EST).
How
is vol % change calculated?
This is a volume percentage change between last quoted volume and the
volume in previous session. It is calculated as last quoted volume change
from the previous session divided by the volume in previous session. It
is updated during the day.
Are
you going to be covering Canadian and other foreign markets?
Sorry, we do not have plans to add Canadian or foreign coverage at this
time.
Are
you going to allow for options tracking?
Sorry, we do not have plans to add options at this time.
What
parameters do you use for MACD and stochastic?
For stochastic, we use 5-3-3. There is more information on the formula
in Education.
For MACD, the parameters
we use are 26-12-9. Here is how it's calculated:
Calculate the 26-day
EMA of the closing price.
Calculate the 12-day
EMA of the closing price.
Subtract the 26-day
EMA from the 12-day EMA - that is the value for the fast line.
Calculate the 9-day
EMA of the fast line - that is the value for the slow signal.
Why
are the earnings release dates on ClearStation and other financial websites
all different?
Every financial website out there will show a different date. This is the reason: 10Qs must be filed for each of the first three
fiscal quarters of the company's fiscal year and are due within 45 days
of the close of the quarter. The company must have a specific date in
which the quarter's books are closed, but they can "release" and "announce"
or "file" any of the 45 days after that date. Because companies have 45
days to report, they often change the announced date (for thousands of
reasons). This results in financial sites showing different dates; they
depend on the sources they use. ClearStation's source is Zacks
Investment Research. The best place to find the most current dates
is on each individual company's Web site. You can find a link to each
company's site in ClearStation's Profile and Fundamentals section. Further
information about earnings release and filing dates are on the SEC
site.
What's
the best browser to use when viewing ClearStation?
That's an easy one - Microsoft
Internet Explorer 5.x. IE does the best job of rendering graphs
and tables. If you use Netscape, you'll notice that your pages will take
much longer to load because of how it processes the information it receives.
I
need to scroll right to see all of ClearStation. Is there a way to get
around this?
ClearStation was designed using a resolution of 800x600. If your monitor
resolution is set to at least 800x600 and you open your window to its
fullest, you won't need to scroll at all.
To change your monitor
resolution on a PC, right-click on your desktop. From the pop-up window
select "Properties" and then "Settings" - you should see display or screen
area listed on that page.
From a Mac, click
on the apple icon in the top left-hand corner. Choose "Control panel"
and then "Monitor & Sounds" to set the resolution.
Some
links don't do anything when I try to click on them - got any suggestions?
Due to a bug in Netscape 3.0 (and any older version), you will not be
able to use any links on the right hand side of each page if you have
to scroll to get to them. So in order to use the links, you should make
sure you have a screen resolution of at least 800x600, open your browser
to its fullest, and reload.
However, we really
do encourage you to download a current (4.x) browser since they are available
for free from both Netscape and Microsoft.
I'm
seeing old information on my pages - what's going on?
Chances are that your browser has a page cached that it shouldn't. Deleting
your cache (or the temporary Internet files) should take care of it. We
suggest deleting your cache often.
I
love your graphs and pages but am having a hell of a time printing them
out - HELP!
We recommend printing any ClearStation page in "landscape" mode to capture
the full page. You can also scale down the page to 80%. Either of these
options are accessable through your printing properties.
Education articles
can be downloaded for better offline viewing and printing. More Information
can be found in the Help section, under Education: download
and print .
How
do I arrange my lists in alphabetical order?
If you click on any of the column header link in Portfolio, Watch List,
or Recommend, the lists will sort by that category. For alphabetical order,
click on "Symbols".
How
do I get to the Member Discussions?
For discussion on a specific stock, go to its Three Point View page. Between
the link for News Articles and Add to Watchlist, you will see a link to
the Discussion area for that stock.
For discussions on
specific topics, click on the Discuss link from the main nav bar. Here
you will find links to many different discussion topics and fourms.
What
are those blue circles I see on the graphs?
The blue circles represent when a position was opened in that stock. A
red circle signals the close of a position.
I emailed support with a question, but I never received an answer! Is
the ClearStation support staff a bunch of slackers??
Uh... no. If you are not getting answers from support, or any of the subscription emails you signed up for, please be sure that your spam filters will accept
addresses from the ClearStation domain (i.e. any email address ending
in @clearstation.com). This way, our messages to you are sure to get there.
I've changed my email address. How can I get my account to reflect
the change?
If you go to Customize (on the top line of the ClearStation nav bar),
you'll see a link to modify your account information. Click on it and
you'll be able to change the address.
Since
I signed up with ClearStation, I've been getting a lot of emails. Is there
any way to cut back on that volume?
You have complete control over the emails that you receive. Here are the
instructions on how to enable and disable them:
To unsubscribe from
kensey's Recommend list or your portfolio updates:
Go to Customize
(on the top line of the navigation bar).
Under the email
preferences, uncheck the box(es) that apply: "ClearBot: Daily Portfolio
Update" and/or "Kensey Recommend List".
Click on "Apply
Changes" (either at the top or bottom of the page) to save the changes.
For
legal reasons, we can't give any one-on-one advice about stocks
(what to buy, what to sell, what we think of one, how to analyze
it...).What we suggest doing is posting your questions to the appropriate
Member Discussion. The ClearStation community is very well informed
and a good mix of knowledgeable traders - we're sure you'll have
luck getting your questions answered there.
